Waiting for My New Vista

A while ago, I had mentioned that I bought a new computer, a Compaq Presario SR2050NX. As part of the deal, I am supposed to receive Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium from Hewlett-Packard (the parent company of Compaq) after Vista is released. Well, Vista has been released. So, where is my free upgrade?

The last time that I checked the status of my Windows Vista order, it says that it will be shipped in March 2007. It seems like a while to wait, since I can go out and buy a new computer with Vista now. On the other hand, the old Dell computer that I had replaced used to crash every day, so I guess my current operating system (Windows XP MCE 2005) is an improvement. Is there anybody else (who bought a computer in the last 3-4 months) that is waiting for their free OS upgrade?

Oh, and where are all of my blog visitors who are running Microsoft Windows Vista? I guess that most other people haven't upgraded yet.

Norton Internet Security Broke My Network.

I have my computer network at home setup so that I can print from either computer and share files between them. I recently tried installing Norton Internet Security (NIS). The next thing I knew I couldn't print or share files between the two computers. In other words NIS broke my home network.

There are a bunch of setting that you can change within NIS that allow for printer and file sharing. But, they are turned off by default. I was finally able to get my printer and file sharing to work, but it was a lot of trouble. I don't know how the average person would be able to figure this out! I am now thinking that NIS is more trouble than it is worth. I'm going back to using just Norton AntiVirus (NAV), or just disabling the firewall settings.

I remember seeing a similar problem happen with my parents' computer. At that time, I couldn't figure out what was wrong. I guess that I know now.

In my last post, I mentioned that I use AvantGo, a free internet information service for Palm, BlackBerry, and Pocket PC. AvantGo is currently running a Refer-a-Friend Sweepstakes. You can win a $1000 Best Buy Gift Certificate (or three other prizes), if you sign up as a new AvantGo user through March 31st. But, I would need to refer you for this offer. So, send me your Email address if you are interested.
